Constrained sintering and cracking of air plasma sprayed thermal barrier coatings: Experimental observation and modeling

The development of vertical cracks in air plasma sprayed (APS) thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) during cycling and constrained sintering under a temperature gradient is investigated. Microstructural analysis shows that the associated with multiple processes, including hold period cleavage cooldown. Inspired by experimental observations, an image-based model used to simulate as coating sinters while substrate. computational results show microstructural imperfections can develop into cracks, which then propagate toward interface. A simple analytical presented for threshold level in-plane stress onset propagation crack sintering. By combining these different modeling approaches, cross-coupling material geometric parameters, how this determines response (microstructure evolution) formation evaluated. In addition, growth mechanism cooldown examined coupling between sintering, growth, TBC lifetime explored.
